Nortal helped build and scale X-Road®, the technology that powers Estonia’s digital government and has become a global standard adopted in more than 25 countries. For over two decades, X-Road has enabled secure data exchange among thousands of organizations and proven resilient against persistent cyber threats. The lessons from Estonia now shape how we design federated data exchange layers worldwide, aligning with EU interoperability and Gaia-X principles to support secure and sovereign information sharing.

Nordic and Baltic leadership in secure digital identity and signatures 

The Nordic and Baltic regions set the global standard for secure digital identity and electronic signatures. In Estonia, a trusted ecosystem built on two-factor authentication and digital signing has become a model for governments worldwide. For more than two decades, we have helped design and expand this ecosystem, from chip-based ID cards and Mobile-ID to the Smart-ID application. Our experience covers the full lifecycle of digital identity, from infrastructure and trust services to authentication and policy development.

Smart-ID: next-generation verified credentials 

Smart ID is a secure mobile authentication and digital signing system that requires no special SIM card and no dedicated secure enclave or HSM on the user device. Free for users and easy to integrate, it has transformed how people and businesses interact online. Our long collaboration with SK ID Solutions shows how strong cryptographic design and governance can build scalable trust ecosystems. This experience shapes our development of qualified trust and digital identity platforms that align with eIDAS 2.0 and adapt to diverse regulatory environments.

Verifiable credentials and digital wallets: Enabling trusted digital ecosystems 

We help governments and enterprises build trust in their digital identity ecosystems through verifiable credentials. Our work spans strategy, policy and technical implementation to enable cross-border interoperability. Together with the Estonian Information System Authority and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, we advanced the EUDI Wallet framework in Europe and the Western Balkans, supporting eIDAS 2.0 adoption and mutual recognition of trust services.
