The Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is the cockpit from which all the activities on the factory floor can be controlled and monitored.
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems in general are not designed to manage production in such detail and flexibility as is required by today’s manufacturing industry.
MES is precisely the opposite. MES collects data in real-time from machines, material and people in the production process. It controls and optimizes manufacturing execution, and communicates with automation. This results in increased productivity as work orders are completed more efficiently and there is less waste in material flow. With detail level control and shorter response time to changes, lead times in production become shorter. Production also becomes more cost-effective.
