Nortal launches cooperation with eID Easy to enhance global utilization of digital signatures

Electronic signatures are pivotal in the creation of digital societies. To support our ambition to provide full-fledged digital services, Nortal announces cooperation with eID Easy. The partnership opens opportunities for Nortal’s current and future customers to expand their business worldwide.

In all digital transactions, the parties should be convinced that the electronic signatures are safe, and the providers are reliable. The seal of trust is placed on signatures that are issued with certificates from an established qualified trust service provider (QTSP). Such electronic signatures carry the stamp of validity from an authority that follows rigorous security requirements, to ensure the identity of the signatory.

In all digital transactions, the parties should be convinced that the electronic signatures are safe, and the providers are reliable.

To extend the reliable basis of electronic signatures, Estonian-rooted start-up eID Easy has connected an extensive network of QTSPs. eID Easy’s API-based platform facilitates the signing of agreements by all parties using their preferred electronic signature, providing interoperability between QTSPs from different countries.

Now Nortal can build solutions with a much larger trust circle and bigger impact for our customers. Platforms like eID Easy empower Nortal’s clients in various sectors to expand their reach exponentially.

Benefits both for the public and private sector

For example, companies in the banking and telecom sectors gain an opportunity to expand the range of supported and trusted electronic signatures quickly and easily, without the need to integrate their internal systems with any additional trust service providers.

Public sector entities have an opportunity to design seamless services, to support foreign citizens while enabling them to continue using the trusted identity issued in their home country.

Global application of digital signature solutions has been hindered by the lack of solutions like eID Easy. Typically, building such capabilities for a system entails substantial upfront investments in development and establishing trust through agreements – barriers that can be significantly mitigated with the adoption of eID Easy.

eID Easy helps to implement electronic signatures in the EU

In the EU, the eIDAS (electronic IDentification, Authentication, and trust Services) regulation will play a vital role in shaping the electronic signature landscape. Specifically, it mandates that public sector entities within EU member states must acknowledge and recognize digital signatures issued by citizens from other EU member states. This means that signatures verified with any European-qualified trust service provider must be recognized in other EU member states.

However, different countries, depending on the means of signing, use signatures with different reliability levels that may be legally valid in their country of origin but not considered sufficiently trustworthy elsewhere. The same limitation applies to signatures verified by qualified trust service providers outside of the EU – there is no trust established between each QTSP out there. Additionally, in many cases signing a single document with certificates issued by different QTSPs might pose significant technical challenges.

To meet these challenges, eID Easy continues to develop a platform that from now on would serve as a springboard for the customers of Nortal too.
