Navigating Africa's journey to a post-digital era
The 10th annual e-Governance Conference, held on 22-23 May in Estonia, brought together industry leaders who explored the key enablers of successful digital transformation. Discussions ranged from citizen-centric digital service design to enhancing national cybersecurity, and preparing for the integration of artificial intelligence in public services.
During the event, our Business Area Director Artur Assor and host Louis Zezeran discussed the evolution towards a post-digital era and the unique challenges faced in Africa.
During the interview, Assor outlined three major steps necessary for the effective implementation of digital government services in Africa:
- Improving connectivity to ensure coverage and affordability
- Implementing human-centric services accessible to all population groups
- Designing policies to support local start-ups and protect intellectual property
Looking beyond the current landscape, Assor emphasized the concept of a “post-digital era,” where the focus shifts to Personal Government services tailored continuously to meet the evolving needs of the population.
However, Assor identified trust as a significant bottleneck in adopting digital services in Africa, contrasting with the European experience. He stressed the importance of transparent and consistent communication about the use of citizens’ data to build this trust.
