NATO opens new opportunities for Finnish IT companies – "The defense sector aims to catch up"

The tightening international security situation is creating new business opportunities for IT companies, and NATO is expanding its collaboration with technology partners to strengthen its digital defense capabilities. We are proud to announce that Nortal has been selected as a supplier under NATO’s Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) program. Finnish technology magazine Tivi interviewed our CEO of Nortal Finland, Harri Vepsäläinen, about Nortal’s acceptance into the program.

The defense sector has been more cautious than the rest of the public sector in moving forward with digitalization, but this is now changing.

Vepsäläinen explains how the increasing complexity of security threats has significantly grown the need for data-driven solutions in the defense sector. He comments that Nortal has a lot to offer NATO:

“We have a proven track record in public sector digital transformation, and we can pass on the best practices from other public sector digital implementations to the defense sector.”

Vepsäläinen continues by noting that the NATO connection will shift the direction of our business to some extent. At the time of the announcement of our BOA contract, we also revealed our intention to focus strongly on the defense sector across all our core markets.

We have invested in defense sector expertise, with people from the sector joining us, including an admiral from the British Navy.

Finally, Vepsäläinen explains how we established our capabilities in the defense sector last year. We realized that we have defense expertise in the Middle East, the Baltics, and the UK, which would be valuable to bring together under one umbrella, and we set out to develop the sector as a unified entity.

While we have business in the U.S. and other regions, Vepsäläinen mentions that the defense side of the company will focus on Europe and the Middle East in this first phase.
