Digital identity verification: The Smart Port turbocharger

Even if most ports aren’t yet “smart,” smart port technology is well known. But digital identity verification, which effectively turbocharges the smart port, is a technology that fewer port professionals are aware of.

For a comprehensive exploration of this technology’s role in port operations, you can delve into the associated white paper in the end of this article, unlocking a deeper understanding of the digital identity verification’s integral role in shaping the future of smart ports.

A smart port is a port where nothing is expected of a driver or passenger beyond following foolproof directions. Nowhere will someone wonder which way to turn. Nowhere will a passenger be asked to fill in a form. And never do they have to present their identification.

In port operations, the benefits of smart are also fairly well known. Manual work is eliminated in terminal traffic management, vehicle classification is done effortlessly, and paper disappears from the system just as port congestion (and CO2) is massively reduced, not to mention precisely measured. But it’s possible to make this seamless experience even better, for passengers, cars, cargo, and those who manage the entire process. Digital identity verification technology essentially turbocharges a smart port, taking smart to a new level.

Digital biometric identity verification solutions can be used to identify passengers and drivers in free-flow during check-in and customs procedures. Passengers and drivers can pre-enroll online, uploading a photo of their passport or driver’s license, or do so in the port before entering check-in. The technology can also be used to give (and restrict) staff and contractors access to the terminal — and even equipment. Port security is improved, and humans are no longer needed to lock and unlock doors.

The technology can boost revenues, as well, enabling the upselling of personalized services for passengers and offering discounts on food and drink to frequent customers. On board, the technology can regulate passenger access to cabins or spas, eliminating key cards and the personnel required to issue them.
