Individual identities are based on unique set of characteristics by which a person is known. In the process of authenticating an individual, you validate the same credentials received in real time against registered dataset. Required datasets might include a cryptographic token (such as smartcard) with corresponding activation codes (PIN) and/or biometrics. This creates the eID Authentication.
Authentication of a national eID is usually a 2-phase process. First, a phsyical entity held by the person (such as an ID-card). Second, a password-like code known by the person (such as a PIN-code). Utilizing information on state issued eID will provide all necessary confirmation of a persons identity.
