An up-and-coming courier firm in a Central European country was in a tight spot. Suddenly managing more than 500 vehicles operating out of three dozen service points was proving tough, and directors suspected that poor handling of the fleet was holding back the company. Anecdotal evidence spoke of redundant trips, underused cars and overworked drivers. But without a clear picture of how their cars were actually moving, management couldn’t pinpoint the problems, much less solve them.
Like most fleet operators, the company had equipped its cars with GPS trackers, which generated huge volumes of location information every minute of every day. Also like most fleet operators, the firm had no way to use these millions of X,Y coordinates to help it make the right business decisions. To extract meaningful insights from these mountains of data, management turned to Nortal.
Nortal’s analysts compiled 18 months’ worth of the courier’s raw GPS information. After carrying out data cleaning and pre-processing work, the team crunched the numbers to create a visualization – a static PDF report for management that included charts, tables and routes displayed on maps. These shed light on what routes were most frequently used, how many inter-city trips were being taken and when, where cars were spending most of their time and so on. The report was scalable, and management could run a repeat at any time using newer data sets if needed.
Based on a clear understanding of how the fleet was performing, the courier’s management was able to change its processes to tackle several efficiency problems it found. Around a quarter of the routes were consolidated, some 80 cars were reallocated to service points where they were more needed and a lot of unnecessary trips were eliminated – leading to close to 20% reduction in fuel expenses.
