Nortal’s digital services benefit Germany’s healthcare

by Nortal HQ, februari 13, 2020

Nortal has successfully exported Estonia’s digital healthcare experience to Germany, hopefully accelerating the country’s journey to better healthcare.

“As part of a pilot project, patients in Hessen will be able to use video consultation hours in the future and have their prescriptions sent electronically to a pharmacy,” writes the Pharmazeutische Zeitung in their article about a joint pilot project between pharmacists, physicians, insurance companies and a billing service Optica in Hessen.

”If an e-prescription is issued, patients can manage it digitally via an e-prescription portal and forward it to a pharmacy, which will supply them with the required medication,” says the article. “It should also be possible to integrate it into the service apps of the insurance companies without complications, and later into medication plans or the electronic patient file.”

The newspaper quotes Jochen Pfänder, CEO to billing and IT service provider Optica, who talks about the e-prescription portal MORE: “The portal was not intended to replicate today’s paper process, but to promote further automation and optimization. In contrast to other approaches, the electronic prescription itself is not forwarded to the recipients (health insurance companies, pharmacies) in the form of a simple digital image of the paper prescription and then deleted from the server. Instead, a digital key is provided.”

“The project is based on the FHIR platform, which has already proven itself in Estonia, and the X-Road connection technology, which enables secure exchange between systems,” writes the Pharmazeutische Zeitung, explaining how in Estonia e-prescription has been available for ten years and electronic patient files and national health portal are a part of everyday life. “The Estonian technology company Nortal now also supports the pilot project in Hessen.”

„The unique experience of Estonia as a leading digital nation is well known in Germany,“ comments Taavi Einaste, head of Nortal Germany. „I am very proud of our team and the co-operation with Optica and other project partners, which enabled the first real life implementation of Estonian digitalization principles in Germany. I am sure we’ll be able to share many more similar news soon, with the help of forward-looking clients and partners. And of course our excellent team.“
